Introduction to the use of R-brul for sociolinguistic analysis: data preparation and analysis
Anna Carolina da Costa Avelheda Bandeira (UFRJ); Silvia Carolina Gomes de Souza Guerreiro (UFRJ)
Menu: The workshop aims to present the features of Microsoft Office Excel® that can be used for preparation and preliminary analysis (organization of extracted data, cross-checks, empty cell checking, selection of examples, construction of graphs ) of the data extracted from the most diverse types of corpora sociolinguistics used in research in the area, offering greater agility in coding and reducing the percentage of possible errors. It is also proposed to present the interactive interface of the R-Brul package for use in the statistical-probabilistic program R, from the preparation of data for analysis in R-Brul (initial stages – installation, program preparation, with the reading of results and identification of information relevant to the analysis (quantitative data, percentage, p-value, logodds, relative weight), through data adjustment step and synchronization of the multivariate round with external file.

Cloze test: a resource for diagnosis and intervention in reading comprehension
Kátia Nazareth Abreu (UERJ); Daniela Cid (UFRJ)
Menu: Reading comprehension has become, over the years, one of the concerns of Portuguese Language teachers in Brazil. There is a pedagogical activity that lasts for approximately 12 years in the years of Elementary and Secondary Education, but has not had the desired success in forming competent readers who respond to the demands of today's society. This workshop will present an off-line experimental methodology known as the Cloze Test (Taylor, 1953), widely used in Educational Psychology and Psycholinguistics in interface with education (Abreu et al, 2017). This technique can be of great assistance for research and educational practice by offering diagnostic and interventional potential on the phenomenon of reading comprehension.

Methodological decisions and ethical care in sociolinguistic research
Raquel Meister Ko. Freitag (UFS)
Menu: Description: Since language is a human capacity, and sociolinguistics is the field of study of the relations between language and society, involvement with people is an inherent feature of their research. The adequacy of research projects to the institutional and fomentation conditions has required the evaluation of the CEP / CONEP, whose norms emanate from research fields of the health area. The field of human and social sciences assumes the understanding that there is a difference between research in human beings and research with human beings, the latter being the nature of sociolinguistic research. Because of this understanding, there are currents of researchers and areas that submit to norms and others that are insubordinate; as is the case, reflection on ethically sensitive issues should be present in the design and conduct of a research project.
Central objective: The central objective of this workshop is to discuss methodological references about ethically sensitive points in sociolinguistic research: (i) the process of enlightenment and free consent and the effects on the observer's paradox; (ii) the use of the covert research strategy; (iii) authoring of the database and responsibility of the researcher and the institution; (iv) conditions of anonymity of the participants: (v) criteria for inclusion and exclusion of participants; and (vi) types of data for sociolinguistic research that can be obtained with exemption from CEP / CONEP appreciation according to Resolution 510/2016.
Statistical models and methods for the analysis of linguistic variation
Marcelo Alexandre Silva Lopes de Melo (UFRJ); Christina Abreu Gomes (UFRJ)
Menu: This workshop aims to address statistical models and methods in the analysis of linguistic variation data. The study of variation and change requires the treatment of a considerable amount of data, and the development of technological resources, over the course of more than 50 years of sociolinguistic research, has recently led to the use of statistical software of general use, the objective of overcoming the limitations of Goldvarb (originally Varbrul), which for a long time subsidized linguistic analyzes. Focusing on logistic regression analysis, issues such as fixed effects and mixed effects in the analysis of variation using the R Package and Language Variation Suite will be approached in a practical way.
Manuella Carnaval (UFRJ); Dennis Castanheira (UFRJ)
Ementa: Inserted in a multimodal pragmatic reality, the Portuguese language teaching nowadays presents didactic challenges that are related to stimuli of diverse natures. Thus, an experimental methodology that contemplates this educational framework, from the work with the acoustic and visual perception, can be used as an important pedagogical resource. In this workshop, we try to address pragmatic aspects of Portuguese language teaching based on an experimental methodology. The following practices are then proposed to the students of this workshop: (i) the establishment of a pragmatic theme; (ii) the elaboration of questions, hypotheses about the application of this theme in the classroom; (iii) the assembly of an experiment in acoustic and visual modality, to be applied in the classroom, as a methodological teaching tool; (iv) the possible analyzes of the results of the didactic experiment; (v) a proposal of re-elaboration of the didactic practice from the results.
